UPDATE: Metro Homicide will investigate fatal South Bend accident

Posted: Updated:
The St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit (CMHU) will look into last week's fatal accident in South Bend. The St. Joseph County Prosecutor's office announced Monday that CMHU offered to and will assist in the investigation of the accident where police found the body of 26-year-old Thomas Arthur of LaPorte.

Arthur was in a one-car accident last Monday on the 1500 block of Elmer in South Bend. When police arrived on the scene of the crash shortly after 1:00pm, they found the vehicle containing Arthur's body fully engulfed in flames.

St. Joseph County Coroner Nancy Pemberton used dental records to identify Arthur's body Thursday, but said he was too badly burnt to determine the cause or manner of death during the autopsy.

In her release announcing CMHU joining the investigation, Jessica McBrier of the County Prosecutor's office said, "It is simply not known, at this time, whether this death may have been a homicide."
