Elkhart Board of Public Works takes steps to deal with Ontwa Township sewer issue

The Elkhart Utility Attorney asked the Board of Public Works to issue an order to show cause hearing to Ontwa Township, which is the last step in the cities enforce plan.  Ontwa Township has failed to deal with a discharge that caused the collapse of a sewer.

Board President for Elkhart Public Works, Michael Machlan says it appears to the board, Ontwa Township has been dragging their feet, when it comes to this issue.  "The initial incident occurred on December 26, 2011," Machlan said, "with the major collapse of a sewer line on County Road 6.  Since that time they have been asked to take care of their discharge that caused that collapse, and of last week, it had still not been remedied."

If Ontwa Township fails to follow suit by dealing with the issue, the city board has the option to file a lawsuit against them.  If nothing is done, the board fears that more of their sewer would collapse.  They have already lost the integrity of a lot of their sewer lines because of their lack of actions so far.
