Thousands without power after transformer malfunction in St. Joseph County

Indiana Michigan Power says around 6600 customers were without power Wednesday morning and into early afternoon in St. Joseph County.  The outage started around 8:45am when a transformer malfunctioned at a substation in South Bend.

I&M crews were immediately brought to the scene to work to restore power.  They expect all power to be restored by 3:00pm today. They do not think the outage was weather-related.

We have gotten word that some schools have asked parents to pick up their kids, if possible.

FOX28 News will have more updates as they become available.
