Child abuse numbers higher than last year

Numbers released by the St. Joseph County Prosecutors office show a rise in the number of child abuse cases. From 2013 to 2014, nearly 20 more cases of abuse were reported. The numbers include sexual acts with a child (14 and younger), sexual misconduct with a minor (15 and 16 years old), incest, child seduction, and disseminating material harmful to a minor.

In 2013, 224 total cases were reported to the St. Joseph County SVU; however, 241 cases were reported in 2014. St. Joseph County Prosecutor Michael Dvorak says he wasn't surprised by the number, "Only 241 cases were reported, but we know there's way more out there," he says.

Dvorak says many times, reports aren't given to police until many years after the crime has been committed, "That's why many of these cases are surfacing now." The prosecutors office says they are working diligently to hammer down on the number of cases, as well as increase awareness.

FOX28's Faran Fronczak is meeting with local groups to find out how they're combating the number increase.
