NRC Chair meets with local concerned citizens

The Chair of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Allison MacFarlane, will tour Cook Nuclear Power Plant Friday in Southwest Michigan.

Ahead of that tour she met with local concerned citizens and environmental groups Thursday.

The meeting was closed to the media but we did speak with representatives from both sides afterwards.

Kevin Kamps, a radioactive waste specialist at Beyond Nuclear said, "our list of concerns is quite long."
He's been voicing concerns about Southwest Michigan's Nuclear Power Plants for over 20 years.  "These are some of the riskiest plants in the U.S.," said Kamps, "so our concern is a Fukushima scale disaster on the Lake Michigan shore line."
"Both plants Palisades and Cook are operating safely," said NRC Spokesperson Viktoria Mitlyng.

Mitlyng said the Chairwoman couldn't comment on camera Thursday about the meeting but said she will take the input back to Washington.  "At almost every plant she meets with citizens groups, public officials to be able to understand the concerns, issues of the public."

Kamps said he's seen this before.  "The NRC will listen to you, they'll say some reassuring words and really nothing happens."

But he says the current chair is different from those in the past.  "I think we have a sympathetic ear with this chariman of the NRC but it's gonna require a lot of follow up," said Kamps.

While MacFarlane is at Cook Nuclear Power Plant Friday we're told she will take reporters questions.
