Suspect killed at scene in courthouse shooting outside of Atlanta

CUMMING, Ga. - Authorities are investigating a shooting scene outside of the Forsyth County courthouse, FOX 5 Atlanta reports. Officials confirm a deputy was shot during the incident. He is being treated at a nearby hospital. The suspect, Dennis Marx, was killed at the scene.

In a news conference, officials say the suspect Dennis Marx drove up to the courthouse with numerous weapons, and "homemade explosive devices." Sheriff's officials say it appears Marx has been planning this for some time, and came to the courthouse with the intention of killing other people'. Officials believe Marx was trying to enter the courthouse when he was shot by nearby deputies.

The entire scene was caught on security camera video from the courthouse. The public is no longer believed to be in danger.

Details are limited at this time. Witnesses say a nearby church was "on lockdown" near the square in Cumming.

Helicopter images show a heavy police presence, with officers surrounding the building. Agents with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation have been called to the scene.

A spokesperson with the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office released a statement saying:

“We want to make sure citizens know that the area has been secured at this time,” said Sheriff Piper.

Roadways surrounding the courthouse continue to be closed and there is no estimation as to when roadways will be reopened.

GBI officials and Forsyth County authorities are sweeping the area for possible additional explosives.
