Orioles draft ND's Connaughton

Posted:
Notre Dame fans know Pat Connaughton mostly for his ability to fly at the hoop and dunk, but now he'll be flying professionally with the Baltimore Orioles.

The Fighting Irish junior was selected in the fourth round of the 2014 MLB draft by Baltimore as a right handed pitcher. Connaughton is a dual-sport athlete at Notre Dame and finished the 2014 baseball season with a 3.92 ERA.

Connaughton hopes the Orioles will allow him to finish his senior season on the basketball team before joining their minor league organization.

After the pick was made by Baltimore, Connaughton posted a statement on twitter about the great moment in his life.

"To all of my peers that have been or will be drafted into a professional sport(s), I wish you nothing but the best of success," said Connaughton on his Twitter account @PlanetPat24. "Make your family, friends, and all those who surround you proud because without them this would not be possible. But remember, by no means is this what you set out to accomplish, it is simply a checkpoint on your pursuit to accomplish bigger and better things. Stay hungry, stay humble. Never forget where you came from, for that place started you down this road. And lastly, don't forget why you play the game. Play it like the eight year old you used to be. After all, that kid's passion and love for the game was destined to do great things. 100 #BaltimoreOrioles."

Connaughton was the 121st overall pick in the draft.
