Suspect in homicide car-jacks several people then shoots himself

Police say a suspect involved in a homicide, car-jacked several people and led police on a chase through Northwest Indiana before shooting himself.

Indiana State Police Detective Chris Campione said a preliminary investigation revealed the man had been involved in a homicide in Knox Friday.  The man left the residence in a personal vehicle and then car-jacked two other vehicles in Starke County.

The last vehicle he car-jacked broke down in Porter County.  Police say two men then stopped to see if they could help the driver but the man implied that he had a weapon and took their 1988 GMC Sierra pick-up.  The two men called 9-1-1, they were not harmed.

Hebron Police spotted the Sierra pick-up vehicle and began a pursuit, which the Porter County Sheriff's Department joined.  Police say the chase crossed numerous county roads and went into Lake County.  At that point the Lake County Sheriff's Department and their aircraft, Eagle One, also joined in on the chase.

Police say stop sticks were thrown out by Crown Point Police.  They say this cause two of the pick-ups tires to deflate.  Indiana State Police shut down the entire interchange of 109th and I-65 during this time.

According to Police the pick-up attempted to make a u-turn to Uo south on I-65 when it lost control and got stuck in gravel between the interstate and the ramp.  As police closed in on the pick-up they say the driver shot himself once.  He was taken to the hospital in Crown Point and then airlifted to a hospital in Oak Lawn, Illinois in critical condition.
