"Rock the Block" cleans up Elkhart neighborhood

Posted:
After a successful first year, Rock the Block is back in Elkhart neighborhoods trying to improve the image of the city.

"[Rock the Block is] an opportunity that we stumbled upon last year when having conversations in the neighborhood about what people wanted to see change," Jason Moreno, program manager for Rock the Block.

The change people see with Rock the Block, is cleaner streets, houses, and alleys. Four crews went door to door in specific neighborhoods, asking what they can do at each house and even more crews help clean the streets and alleyways.

Saturday, Rock the Block worked around the intersection of Cleveland and Ashland. Volunteers work from about 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.

"It makes me feel really good to make other people feel good," says Joseph Barber, a crew leader for Rock the Block.

Moreno says residents really appreciate the service, but sometimes that is not their first reaction,

"Sometimes people are concerned about what's going on and they don't know...hey is this something we've got to pay for?"

In this case, having a beautiful neighborhood comes free. Moreno said it's not all about the clean-up,

"The fact that the neighborhood gets cleaned up in the process is a by-product of the fact that we have people coming from all across the city to join hand in hand in this neighborhood to build relationships," says Moreno.

Moreno is also the Community Organizer at La Casa Inc. and added they are planning on organizing another event in the fall. He also says volunteers do not have to sign up, they can come out at any time during the event.

They know a lot of veterans are in the area and wanted to get their stories on file, so the museum asked local high schools students to make it happen.
