UPDATE: Elkhart County also involved in synthetic marijuana sting

Posted:
Six local convenience stores were raided today during a synthetic marijuana sting in South Bend and Mishawaka. Narcotics investigators with the Metro Special Operations Section, South Bend Police Department, and Mishawaka Police Departments executed the search warrants.

The Elkhart County Prosecutor's Office has confirmed that they are involved in a multi-agency investigation that is related to police activity in South Bend and Mishawaka. The Prosecutor's Office has said that six locations were raided in Elkhart County in addition to the ones in South Bend and Mishawaka. FOX28 crews have spotted Elkhart Police responding to gas stations at Franklin St. and Thomas St., as well as at Franklin St. and Indiana Ave.

The locations FOX28 have been told are being raided in South Bend and Mishawaka include:

• Stop Shop - 1039 Lincolnway West, South Bend
• Rick's Mart - 3529 W. Western Avenue, South Bend
• Sam's Food Mart - 1336 Lincolnway West, South Bend
• Eddy Street Food Mart - 334 N. Eddy Street, South Bend
• Always Open -1401 N. Bendix Avenue, South Bend
• Rick's - 302 S. Main Street, Mishawaka

"People living in the neighborhoods around these markets and gas stations, including parents, reached out to law enforcement with their concerns regarding possible synthetic drugs being sold," St. Joseph County Prosecutor, Michael A. Dvorak, said in a statement. This led to the initiation of the operation. The officers who worked together on this lengthy investigation should be commended."

South Bend Police Capt. Phil Trent said the investigation leading to these raids has been going on for a year.

This is a developing story. FOX28 will have more details throughout the evening.
