Veterans Affairs audit shows 3 percent of Northern Indiana vets waited 30 days or longer

Posted:
The House of Representatives has passed legislation in the wake of the Veterans Affairs scandal that has left Hoosier veterans waiting for weeks after their initial appointment. The House bill, if signed into law, would allow patients facing delays to get paid outside treatment at local health care facilities. The 421-0 vote is in response to the VA’s backlog and falsified data controversy.

An audit released this week revealed that 57,000 patients waited for more than three months to receive an initial appointment. CNN reports that another 63,000 veterans never received an appointment over the past decade. The VA audit report shows that 3 percent of appointment wait times were 30 days or longer in the Northern Indiana region.

“Yesterday’s Veterans Affairs (VA) audit showing almost 60,000 veterans waiting to get appointments at the VA with 70 percent of facilities placing these patients on alternative lists to make wait times appear shorter is appalling. This legislation will give the VA the authority to provide care for eligible covered veterans and help lower the egregious wait times we’re seeing across the country,” Representative Jackie Walorski said in a statement. “My priority will continue to be ensuring our veterans receive the care and benefits they deserve and this legislation is one step in the right direction.”

FOX 28 will continue to follow the VA controversy as it unfolds. Be sure to check the FOX 28 homepage for updates.
