UPDATE: Evacuation lifted after LaPorte gas line capped

Nipsco officials say that people are allowed return to their homes late Tuesday evening, after crews capped a gas leak in LaPorte. It happened in the area of Indiana and Jefferson Avenues.

LaPorte County Fire Department told FOX28 the leak occurred when a six inch gas line in an alley was hit by a construction crew working on a nearby parking lot.

A 12 block radius was evacuated during that leak. We're told the area included two apartment complexes, city hall, the courthouse and many small businesses. Those evacuated were gathered at nearby Lincoln Elementary school. Residents tell us local businesses provided food while they waited to return home.

The LaPorte County Sheriff says there are no injuries.
