FSSA: Tricia's Playhouse was on probation at the time of accidental hanging

An official with the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration, FSSA, says Tricia's Playhouse in Michigan City has received a certificate of closure.

The action follows an investigation Tuesday night in which the agency found the center was "in violation of supervision regulations" at the time five-year-old Amareon Williams was injured in the backyard of the facility.  Officials say Williams was pronounced dead after being taken to the hospital Monday.

LaPorte County Coroner John Sullivan says Williams died Monday after accidentally hanging himself with a jump rope at a daycare facility.

"The autopsy that was done today (Tuesday) revealed the cause of death to be asphyxiation due to hanging," Sullivan says.  He adds the manner of death was determined to be accidental.

Sullivan says the jump rope was left hanging over a play fort in the backyard of the daycare.

The incident happened Monday at Tricia's Playhouse Daycare in the 18-hundred block of Michigan Boulevard in Michigan City.  Michigan City Police say emergency crews first responded to the daycare at around noon.  Police say Williams was transported to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Marni Lemons, FSSA Deputy Director of Communications and Media, says Tricia's Playhouse has 30 days to appeal the department's decision to temporarily close the facility.

Lemons says Tricia's Playhouse was on probationary status at the time of the incident.  Lemons says the daycare was undergoing a plan of correction after a yearly inspection on April 21st.  The FSSA says that investigation revealed several violations.  The FSSA says those violations, outlined here, included a finding that two staff members were missing certificates for CPS training.  The FSSA also says the daycare failed to report "suspected physical abuse, sexual abuse, child neglect or child exploitation as required" to DCS.

The LaPorte County Prosecutor tells FOX28 they are still investigating, and they won't know whether any criminal charges will be filed until the investigation is complete.

Several people who live near the daycare told us the owners of Tricia's Playhouse are, "good people."  Aisha Branch said she had never heard of previous issues at the daycare.  "I'm not worried about that stuff, a life's been lost, that's what's important.  Somebody really need to support his mom and the people that's involved," said Branch.
