Free summer lunches available for students in South Bend

Posted:
The Salvation Army Kroc Center in South Bend is one of 24 locations in South Bend offering free meals for students during the summer. In order to make sure the meals are healthy for growing minds, Kroc Center chefs abide by national nutrition guidelines.

"So we have a certain amount of fruits, veggies, proteins, and carbs," Program Director Sharon Dutkowski said. "So kids leave here with great meals, but [also] nutritious to be able to help them grow and develop as they should."

Dutkowski says the free meals are a big reason the center is so popular during the summer. This is the second consecutive year that the Kroc Center is participating with the South Bend Summer Food Service Program - an initiative with South Bend Community Schools that provides free lunches for students during the summer.

"Knowing that their children are eating healthy meals while they're here is definitely a factor," Dutkowski said.

The meals are a hit with kids too.

"Every day they ask us 'what are we having today?'" Renee Smith, 18, camp supervisor, said. "'What's for breakfast? What's for lunch?'"

The Indiana Department of Education says just under 60% of students in St. Joseph County get food assistance during the school year. That's about 10% higher than the state average

"A child needs nutrition to keep their energy level for calories, for growth, to keep hydrated," Gail Weismann, a registered dietitian at South Bend Memorial Hospital, said.

Weismann says an easy way for students and parents to remember what a balanced meal should look like is to aim for a mix of colors on your plate. Colors to make sure you add to your plate include green (for vegetables), reds and oranges (for fruits), and tan and white (for starches).
