Granger man sentenced to 97 months in federal prison for role in child pornography ring

A Granger man was sentenced to 97 months in federal prison Thursday for his involvement in an international child pornography ring.

Andrew Korpal, 29, pleaded guilty in March to charges that he received child pornography, and will be subject to 12 years of supervised release and be required to register as a sex offender after his sentence is over, according to the U.S. Attorney's office in the Eastern Louisiana district.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said the arrest of Korpal, who was charged along with 12 other men charged in connection with the ring, followed one of the largest online child exploitation investigations in the history of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The pornography ring allegedly victimized more than 250 minors in thirty-nine states and 5 foreign countries.  "The underground website was a hidden service board on the Tor network and operated from about June 2012 until June 2013, at which time the site contained more than 2,000 videos and had more than 27,000 members," said Homeland Security in a statement.

According to court documents, Korpal received explicit videos depicting sexual exploitation of minors from Jonathan Johnson of Abita Springs, Louisiana. Investigators say Johnson was the primary administrator of the site. Officials say he admitted to creating multiple fake female personas on popular social networks to target and sexually exploit children, and coached others to do the same.

Court documents say federal investigators executed a warrant on Korpal's home in Granger in November of last year.

Johnson, who has been in federal custody since June of 2013, is charged with operating a child exploitation enterprise.
