Former LaPorte police officer charged with embezzling from F.O.P.

Former LaPorte Police officer Mark Bishop faces felony theft charges for allegedly stealing from his local Fraternal Order of Police (F.O.P.) chapter.

According to court documents, Bishop is accused of stealing over $7,000 from the F.O.P. The LaPorte County Prosecutor charged him June 3 with theft, a Class D Felony.

In a statement, LaPorte Police Chief Adam Klimczak said F.O.P. leadership discovered in April that Bishop had been using group funds for personal use. Klimczak said he met with Bishop personally, before turning the investigation over to Indiana State Police.

"The department as a whole was very disappointed in the decisions made by one of our own," Klimczak said, "It is our hope that the outcome of this unfortunate incident will serve as a reminder that no one is above the laws that the members of this department have sworn to enforce."

Bishop was a member of the LaPorte Police for nearly three years, resigning in April of 2014 for "personal reasons."
