UPDATE: Charges filed in Friday stabbing in South Bend

Jerry Winfield, 54, was charged Monday with Felony Aggravated Battery for his alleged role in a stabbing that left a man in critical condition Friday in South Bend.

St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit (CMHU) investigators were at the scene of a stabbing Friday at LaSalle Park Homes on Jefferson and Kenemore in South Bend. Police say an off duty South Bend police officer, who does security for the homes, saw the victim, William Johnson, on the ground bleeding and called the South Bend Fire department medics just after 1:30pm.

Police tell us Johnson was taken to local hospital in critical condition with multiple stab wounds. The St. Joseph County Prosecutor's office said Johnson condition was serious but stable at last update.

CMHU investigators located Winfield near the scene and took him in for questioning before arresting him. The prosecutor's office says Winfield allegedly stabbed Johnson during an argument about a debt Johnson owed to him.
