The mother of a child who police say accidentally hung himself while playing at a Michigan City day care has retained a lawyer to investigate the death.

The LaPorte County Coroner says five-year-old Amareon Williams died on June 9th, after accidentally hanging himself with a jump rope in the backyard of Tricia's Playhouse located in the 1800 Block of East Michigan Boulevard.

Michigan City Police say emergency crews first responded to the daycare around noon the day of the incident.  Police say Williams was transported to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Mark Novak, Managing Partner of Anesi, Ozmon, Rodin, Novak & Kohen Ltd., says Anita Leflore is now planning her son Amareon's funeral.  He says it will take place on Saturday in Chicago.  "This unspeakable tragedy could have been prevented," he says.

A release from the firm claims "at the time of this tragic incident, there were no staff members directly monitoring or supervising the children playing outside in the daycare's backyard."  Novak says the firm will "pursue all legal remedies on Leflore's behalf."

A representative with the Indiana Family And Social Services Administration tells FOX28 Tricia's Playhouse was on probationary status at the time of the incident, due to several violations discovered during an inspection in April. Tricia's Playhouse has since been temporarily closed by the agency.

FSSA says the daycare was undergoing a plan of correction after a yearly inspection on April 21st.  The FSSA says that investigation revealed several violations.  Those violations, outlined here, included a finding that two staff members were missing certificates for CPS training.

The LaPorte County prosecutor says they are still investigation and they won't know whether any criminal charges will be filed until the investigation is complete.
