Police say a 24-year-old woman is dead after hitting her head while vomiting out of a car window.

Commander of the St. Joseph County Fatal Alcohol Crash Team, Tim Spencer says the woman was leaving a gathering on Chestnut street around 4:45 Sunday morning. The St. Joseph Prosecutor's office identified the woman as Amanda Ezra. An autopsy is being conducted on Ezra.

Ezra and another person shared the passenger seat of her minivan. There were five people total in the vehicle.

Police said Ezra had her head out the window because she was sick and hit her head on something. Ezra died from her injuries.

Spencer says the driver took off, but was caught and arrested. He's facing preliminary charges of OWI causing serious injury and leaving the scene, but the case is still under review and no formal charges have been filed.

A vigil and benefit for her family has been planned for this Saturday at the Hideout Lounge in Mishawaka. Details may be found here on the event's Facebook page.
