Person grazed by bullet at Granger cookout

A guest at a backyard cookout was grazed by a bullet over the weekend.

The Elkhart County Sheriff's Department is investigating the shooting that happened Saturday evening in the 51000 block of Meadow Pointe. (CR 1, in Granger)  Police say people were gathered in the backyard of a home for a cookout when they heard several gunshots in the distance.  One of the guests was then grazed by a bullet.

The man who lives in the home where this happened tells us the bullet grazed his fiancee's father.  He says the man has a bruise from the bullet but is doing fine.

The homeowner says they were having a cook out to celebrate his sons birthday and Father's day when this happened.  He says they found the bullet in the backyard and gave it to the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department.

Captain Jim Bradberry with ECSD says it's too early to know who fired the gun or why.  "At this point to speculate was it actual crime, was it accidental, was it a celebratory shot, I can't say that at this point."

The Elkhart County Sheriff's Department says their investigation into the origin of the shots led them to a property on CR 1 but they are looking for more information.  The shooting is still under investigation and police are asking anyone with information to contact them.  You can call the Detective Bureau at 574-891-2300 or click the "submit a tip" button on the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department Facebook Page.
