MISHAWAKA - Felony charges have been filed against 23-year-old Kyle T. Papa. Police say he was driving while 24-year-old Amanda Ezra was vomiting out of the passenger window of a van. When Papa allegedly jumped the curb of a cul-de-sac near the 300 block of Chestnut, the van squeezed between an electrical pole and a guide wire.

Mishawaka Police Captain Timothy Spencer testifies that the wire caught Ezra’s head, jerking it back to strike the side of the van. Ezra’s injuries were fatal.

Police say there were five passengers in the van: two in the back on either side of a child seat, and three in the front; Ezra sitting in the lap of another passenger, Papa behind the wheel. They were leaving a party at approximately 4:40 a.m. Police say that after the van pulled over about a block away from the incident, Papa and one of the passengers fled on foot.

Police later found and arrested Papa. At last report he is still in the St. Joseph County Jail.

Papa is charged with three felonies: leaving the scene of an accident after operating while intoxicated causing serious bodily injury, operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated resulting in death of another person, and possession of marijuana with a prior conviction for possession of marijuana. He is also charged with two misdemeanors: possession of marijuana and driving without a license.

A vigil and benefit for Amanda Ezra’s family has been planned for this Saturday at the Hideout Lounge in Mishawaka. Details may be found here on the event's Facebook page. You can also go into any 1st Source or Community Wide Bank to make a donation to the Amanda Ezra Benefit Fund.
