Tornado confirmed in Madison

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) --  The National Weather Service confirms a tornado touched down on Madison's southwest side.

The NWS says an EF2 tornado hit with peak wind speeds of 120 mph.

City officials say the roofs were torn off of six houses in a two block area of Yorkshire Road and Friar Lane near Vitense Golfland.

Homeowners in the area say they took cover just as the storm hit.

"I literally saw the tornado just pulverizing all of my trees. So at that point, I started running for the basement and only made it as far as the hallway before the roof was just sucked right off and I was holding onto the door to keep from getting sucked out myself," says Dave Farrey.

A number of trees and power lines were knocked down.

It's a sight Patty Frisch says she thought she'd never see.

"We've been in the neighborhood for 42 years and we thought this would never happen. You just don't know. There is no mercy when it comes to nature."

Madison fire officials say there is significant tree damage throughout the city and over the next several days certain streets will be blocked off for tree removal.

Mayor Paul Soglin says damage estimates to the city are between $7 to $10 million.

"There's a lot of damage, extensive damage to these homes, some appear to have been lifted off their foundation, overall we didn't have anything totally leveled."

The Mayor also says no volunteers are needed, as they have plenty of crews working on the clean-up process.
