New South Bend firefighters sworn in

SOUTH BEND - The 2014 class of South Bend firefighters were sworn in during Wednesday morning's public safety board Meeting.  Ten new recruits spent the last 20 weeks training to become firefighters for the city of South Bend.  This was the first class of recruits to train at the Luther J. Taylor Sr. Fire Training Center.

One of the newest members of the South Bend Fire Department, Corrie Carr, said this is the next step in her dream of being a firefighter.

"I am on the New Carlisle Fire Department," Carr said, "and ever since I joined, I've loved every minute of it, so [I'm] just continuing my pursuit in a career that is going to be very rewarding to me."

The recruits were sworn in at a ceremony in front of their friends and families.  Deputy Mayor Mark Neal was on hand to pin their badges on their uniforms.  They were given their assignments and will report to work as early as Thursday.  The Department presently employs 248 full time firefighters in four divisions, and serve a population of approximately 107,700.
