Strong storm cells move through, lines down, power out to thousands

The storm that rolled through Michiana Wednesday left quite a bit of damage in it's wake.

Thousands of homes remain without power across Michigan and Indiana. Southbound lanes of US33 were blocked in Goshen between Rieth Blvd. and CR17 for some time because of downed tree.  That road is now clear.
Several other trees and lines are down across the area.  There were so many trees and branches down at the intersection of Adams and Apple in Osceola that a neighbor there said it "looked like a war zone."

In Elkhart, on Floyd Street, a tree fell onto a home.  No one was hurt but it caused some damage to the house.
Another tree fell onto a home on 13th Street in Niles.  The homeowner said she didn't hear the tree fall, she just turned and saw all the green from the leaves.  Sheila Maines said, "first saw a hole about the size of a coffee can in the front corner of the living room, water was coming in there."

Maines said she's grateful no one was hurt but overwhelmed by all the work that will need to be done to her house now.
The tree took a power line down with it so crews were working to free that in front of her home.  The Clay Township Fire Department responded to her home because they said the Niles Fire Department was too busy.  They had her family evacuate because of the live power line.

The Fire Department told us that most of their calls after the storm today were due to downed trees and power lines.  Battalion Chief, Ron Bertlinger said, "we urge if there are power lines down to stay away from them, there are still some that are laying in the ground and as AEP re powers some of the lines they may be energized again."

He added that if you see any downed trees you should call 9-1-1 because you never know if there are also some power lines tangled in there.
