St. Joseph Med Center offering 3-D mammograms

St. Joseph Regional Medical Center has some new technology that's making mammograms better than ever. Now you can get a 3-D mammogram. The new 3-D mammogram, is able to capture images of the breast in layers, so any suspicious spots can be seen from more than one angle. Radiologist, Linda Tuthill, says it really makes a difference,

"The most added benefit is that they've proven is reduction in calling women back for false findings on a mammogram," Tuthill said.

She also added that women with less fatty tissue in their breasts will get a more accurate reading with this new machine.

St. Joseph Regional Medical Center says the 3-D mammograms might not be covered by insurance companies for at least a year, so they're offering this extra service free of charge until January. Normally they estimate the cost to be about $100 - $150 extra for the 3-D image in addition to the traditional 2-D image. St. Joseph is also the only facility that offers free counseling for those who think they're genetically at risk of breast cancer.  Counseling is available Monday, Wednesday, and Friday either in person or over the phone.
