UPDATE: Trial date set for 17-year-old charged with attempted murder and burglary in North Liberty home invasion

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY -

UPDATE: A trial date has been set for Austin Clark.

He will appear in court on September 30th and the trial is on October 28th.

Clark was charged on June 24th with murder and burglary, both are Class A Felonies.

PREVIOUS: The 17-year-old suspect in Saturday's violent home break-in in North Liberty has been charged with Attempted Murder and Burglary.

The St. Joseph County Prosecutor's office announced charges Tuesday against Austin Clark for his alleged role in a break-in that left a 52-year-old man hospitalized with non-life threatening gunshot and stab wounds. Clark's name is being released because his case was directly filed to adult court.

Police say Clark admitted to them he entered the home on Bruce Swope on the 29000 block of Quincy Rd through an unlocked door. They say Clark told them he entered the home three separate times. After stealing cigarettes and alcohol the first two times, police say Clark told their investigators that he went back a third time "to do something stupid."

According to the police affidavit, Clark told police he decided to try to kill Swope, and stabbed him twice in the head with a screwdriver while he was in his bed. Swope awoke and engaged in a struggle with Clark before subduing him and holding him at gunpoint, but when Swope went to inspect the home for other intruders, Clark took a shotgun he had found earlier in the home and shot Swope in the face. Police received calls from neighbors about the shot around 2:30am, but Clark had fled the home by the time they arrived.

Police were able to track down Clark when they found his iPod that he left in Swope's home. Clark is being held on $1 million bond, after police claimed he was a danger to the community, after police said he told them he had identified another house he planned to break into if he did not find what he was looking for at Swope's home.
