Elkhart County debuts new mountain bike trail at Bonneyville Mill

ELKHART -

Sunday marked the grand opening of the Bonneyville Mill Mountain Bike Trail in Elkhart County. Discussion about the trail began about two years ago, and groundbreaking got started April, 2013. The trail didn't cost the county anything. President of the Northern Indiana Mountain Bike Association, John Marquardt, says the trail was constructed thanks to over 800 volunteers, plus donated excavating materials.

At the grand opening Sunday morning, cyclists gathered for a good ride and free lunch afterwards. Riders say the trail is fun for all ages and levels of experience,

"You can be any experience level, I know my mom loves to go out and ride all the time, and she's obviously quite a bit older than me," says volunteer and cyclist Mike Paczkowski.

The trail is divided into three clearly marked areas of difficulty. Green signs mark the beginners trail, blue the intermediate, and black for the advanced.

The trail is open to the public at all times, unless otherwise posted on the park website. NIMBA says they want riders to understand this is not a paved trail, it's a mountain bike trail, and volunteers will need to maintain it year round. They hope to have races and events using the trail in the future.
