St. Joseph County CASA looking for volunteers to begin training next month

Posted:
ST. JOSEPH COUNTY -

The St. Joseph County CASA office is looking for volunteers to train to become Court Appointed Special Advocates for children.

CASA will begin training new people on July 8 to become volunteers who represent and look out for the best interests of abused and neglected children as they progress through the foster care and child welfare system. Volunteers meet with the child they represent, family members and officials, and attend court hearings to inform the judge on the best decision for the child.

When FOX28 spoke to CASA in May, they said St. Joseph County has the longest waiting list for volunteers in the state of Indiana. CASA says they only reach 35% of the children they need each year, which leaves 462 children in the county lacking a court-appointed advocate.

Volunteers undergo 35 hours of training and must be at least 21-years-old and able to pass a background check and drug screening. Anyone interested in volunteering is encouraged to call the St. Joseph County CASA Office at 574-233-2272 or visit www.sjccasa.org.
