Michiana reacts to same-sex marriage ruling

Posted:
SOUTH BEND -  People across Michiana, gay and straight, are responding to the news of a judge striking down Indiana's ban on same-sex marriage.

Many people gathered at a downtown South Bend restaurant, Wednesday evening to celebrate what they're calling a victory for Indiana.

"I'm feeling ecstatic It's spectacular that this is happening in Indiana," says Michael Lane with Guerrilla Gay Bar.
The ruling has been a goal of activists for years. "To just be at work today and just see, 'oh a circuit court has basically said 'no' to all of that' is a very rewarding experience," says same-sex marriage supporter, Nathaniel Krouse.

Supporters of same-sex marriage say the ruling is an indication of what's to come for the rest of the country. "I think that gay marriage is going to be legal across the entire country," says Lane. Krouse says, "Kinda shows the message that if it can be stopped in Indiana, it's done. It's gonna be nationwide."

Not everyone is reacting with joy. "It's never a good public policy to disagree with God," says Patrick Mangan with Citizens for Community Values. He says he's disappointed with the judge's ruling, although he's not really surprised. "The so-called momentum in favor of homosexual marriage has been all activist judges. None of this has really been at the ballot box," he says.

Mangan says the decision to define marriage should be left up to the states and he'll continue to fight for a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage in Indiana. "Homosexuality in every one of its forms is not healthy, it's not a good thing."

Meanwhile, supporters of same-sex marriage say they'll continue to celebrate as long as they can.

Attorney General Greg Zoeller has asked for a stay on the ruling while it appeals, which would halt gay marriages for the time-being.
