Local Magistrate speaks about the impact of family violence in our community

The St. Joseph County Democratic Party hosted its Blue Plate Luncheon Thursday at the South Bend Chocolate Cafe in South Bend. The luncheon was entitled, "The Children Are Watching: The Impact of Family Violence in our Community."

Circuit Court Magistrate Andre Gammage lead the luncheon, speaking on his experience dealing with family violence, not only as a Magistrate, but in his past as a lawyer.

Gammage said people would be surprised on the amount of family violence that happens in our community.

"One of the things that happens is that kids are exposed to violence," Gammage said, "and I think you would be surprised to understand how that desensitizes the violence and how they may go on to become violent individuals, how that may effect their relationships as adults, and how that may effect them in school because of the stress they may encounter at home."

The Blue Plate Luncheon series takes place the third Thursday of every month. The cost to participate is $5, which includes a complimentary drink.
