Northern Indiana veterans struggled with VA bureaucracy

"The Day before we got the money in, we had literally 15 bucks left in our bank account."

Ryan Linn served in Afghanistan for a little more than three years. He suffered a traumatic brain injury from an IED that hit his vehicle...Ryan says that, along with PTSD, have left him unable to work. He and his wife, Mallory, filed for benefits with the VA a month after he got home. But well over a year later, they were still waiting.

"Waiting for the benefits side, it was hard, especially for me, just because the fact my wife had to work then she'd come home and do about 98% of the house work," Linn said.

The Linns say they received Ryan's benefits a year and a half later...and only after getting Congresswoman Jackie Walorski's office to advocate for them. Ryan's fight with VA bureaucracy for his benefits is just one of several problems veterans across the country are facing right now. Congresswoman Walorski says issues like long wait times for appointments at VA clinics shouldn't still be a problem in her district.

"There's got to be standards that are uniform where everyone complies, everybody does the same thing and there's none of this cross interpretation of laws or cross interpretation of incentives and benefits," the Congresswoman said.

And the Linns say they've heard from friends that things are improving here and in the rest of the country. But the Congresswoman says there's still a lot of work to be done. Ryan says he'd like to see more improvement too so other vets don't have to struggle like he did.

"I'd like to see the same type of standard for everyone and everyone getting taken care of," Linn said.
