Fire destroys Pendry Powder Coatings factory in Warsaw

Posted: Updated:
A 911 call was made to the Warsaw Fire Department around 7:00am Friday morning regarding flames that broke out at Pendry Powder Coatings, a powdered paint factory in Warsaw.

Firefighters responded around 7:30am at the factory located at the intersection of 275 West, 250 North in Warsaw. Dispatchers say every water tanker in Kosciusko County was sent to the scene and mutual aid was requested from Noble and Whitley counties.

It took crews nearly two hours to get the blaze 90 percent under control. The building has been reported a total loss. Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department spokesperson Chad Hill says crews are keeping 250 North going eastbound closed till the late afternoon. They are also keeping everyone a half-mile from the scene as a precaution because they are concerned a chemical tank could still explode. The Hazardous Materials Department arrived on scene around 10:30am to make sure the chemicals did not leak into the nearby sewer or water systems.

The owner of the factory, George Pendry, said there were 17 people employed at the facility, and they had been in business over 15 years. He says he was inside the building when the fire started, and tried to put it out. He says they didn't have enough water, and the fire spread too quickly and it was hard to keep up. "I've built this business from the ground up. I started in my garage, and made it all the way up to this point. And now, it's just gone. I don't even know where to go from here or what's next," says Pendry.

Pendry says he does have insurance on the building, along with insurance for his 17 employees to be paid he says for the next couple of weeks. He says fire crews along with the fire marshall have ruled the fire's cause to be electrical.
