Representative Jackie Walorski responds to nomination of Robert McDonald as Secretary of Veterans Affairs

Posted:
President Obama nominated West Point Graduate Robert McDonald as the new Secretary of Veterans Affairs Monday.

"What especially makes Bob the right choice to lead the VA right now is his three decades of experience in building and managing one of the world's most recognized companies, Procter and Gamble," Obama says.  "The VA is not a business, but it is one of our largest departments, some 340,000 employees working in more than 1,700 facilities serving more than nine million veterans."

If confirmed, McDonald will replace acting VA Secretary Sloan Gibson.

"We need to put care for the veteran at the center of everything we do at Veterans Affairs.  At Procter and Gamble, we always focused on our customer. At the VA, the veteran is our customer, and we must all focus all day, every day, on getting the benefits that they so earned," McDonald says.  "It would indeed be an honor and a privilege to, if confirmed by the senate,  serve as secretary of foreign affairs, to improve the lives of our country's veterans and to help change the way the US department of veterans affairs does business."

Indiana Congresswoman Jackie Walorski says the announcement was "another step in the process of uncovering the rampant corruption that has plagued the VA for years."

Walorski, a member of the House Veterans' Affairs Committee, hopes McDonald's background will help bring accountability to the VA.

"It’s critical that President Obama provide him with every tool to hold bad actors accountable and ensure our vets receive the care they deserve. I urge McDonald to follow in the footsteps of my colleagues and put politics aside, work together and protect our nation's veterans," she says.
