WINONA LAKE -

Residents at the Fairlane Mobile Home Park in Winona Lake are devastated. During Monday night's storm a tree fell onto the Holbrook family's mobile home, killing fourteen year old Danny.

"He helped all the little ones and tried to steer 'em right instead of...this shouldn't have happened to him," Chris Kreider, a friend and neighbor, said.

Chrissy Hollon, another friend and neighbor, says her son was sleeping over, just across the room from Danny. He was able to crawl out of the wreck and run to his Mom's trailer.

"He told me that there was a tree on top of Danny's trailer and we thought it was a little tree...the volunteers came over and I come out and look and that's when I lost it because I knew my son was in there," Hollon said.

Chrissy's son, Corbitt, says he heard the tree fall.

"We heard a crack outside and we thought it was a branch up there and a few minutes later before Danny...before it happened...Danny said, 'Let's have a peaceful life' and then it just broke..." Corbitt said.

Throughout the day, friends and neighbors have been streaming down to the Holbrook's mobile home to leave gifts like a skateboard and a stuffed puppy in memory of Danny.

"There were no sirens going off. None at all...that we heard. It hit us so fast that we couldn't even do nothing," Chrissy Hollon said.

Chris Kreider believes the tragedy could have been prevented.

"This is a nice place to live, but you know all the old trees and stuff that were supposed to be taken out...they should've been taken out because if they would've been taken out then we wouldn't be standing right here today and you know, the loss of a little kid," Kreider said.

Danny's family is accepting donations for his funeral expenses and for his Grandmother's hospital care. Friends say she was hospitalized with heart trouble following Danny's death. The Titus Funeral Home in Warsaw has information on how you can donate to the Holbrook family.
