Purdue researchers say severe storms damaged local corn crops

Elkhart County -

Severe storms have left traces of damage all across Michiana this week, but Purdue researchers say damage to local corn crops have a chance to linger.

Jeff Burbrink, the Agricultural Educator at the Purdue Extension in Elkhart County, say corn was hit hardest by the heavy winds brought by the storm, possibly derailing a good year for the crop. Burbrink says that in many cases, winds were strong enough to snap stalks entirely, but less damaged plants could still be saved.

"Corn that snapped off below the ear is very unlikely to recover," Burbrink says, "But there still may be hope for the corn with dislodged roots or stalks that snapped off above the ear."

Burbrink encouraged growers to allow four-to-five days for dislodged crops to right themselves and grow roots to compensate, and says corn that's leaning over but stayed planted should be fine. He says farmers should document all damage in case the USDA declares the area a disaster later on.
