Hearing to move case to adult court set for teen accused of reckless homicide in fatal U.S. 31 crash

Posted:
ST. JOSEPH COUNTY -

The hearing date was set for an 18-year-old accused of reckless homicide for a crash that killed three people on U.S. 31 last August. On Aug. 19, a St. Joseph County court will decide whether to move his case to adult court.

Because the suspect was 17-years-old at the time of the accident, prosecutors filed Friday a "Petition Alleging Delinquency" in juvenile court alleging three counts of Reckless Homicide, with the immediate intention of filing a motion to move the case to adult court. The charges were not filed until ten months after the accident.

In the crash last August, Bob and Judy Hillers, and Judy's cousin Janice Cash were killed when the suspect's minivan collided head-on with their SUV after reportedly crossing over the centerline. Witnesses at the scene claimed the suspect's vehicle was weaving in and out of traffic right before the crash.

FOX28's Traci Capellman has covered this case extensively throughout, and spoke with the victim's family after charges were announced on Friday.
