Van Buren County Sheriff's Office cracks down on boating under the influence

The Van Buren County Sheriff's Department released the results from their participation in Operation Dry Water.  The nationally coordinated boating under the influence awareness and enforcement campaign took place June 27th through June 29th.

The department stopped 72 boats, issued nine citations and made one boating under the influence arrest.  “Our goal is to educate boaters as well as remove impaired operators from the water in order to keep all other boaters safe," says Sheriff Dale Gribler.

The Sheriff's Department reports alcohol is the leading contributing factor in recreational boater deaths.  A release from the department cites a statistic from the U.S. Coast Guard which states that "since 2009, the year Operation Dry Water launched, there has been a 37 percent drop in the number of boater deaths where alcohol use was the known primary contributing factor."
