IUSB students organizes peaceful protest at Grape Road Hobby Lobby

A previous version of this story had a headline that read "IUSB organizes peaceful protest at Hobby Lobby Grape Road." Multiple comments pointed out that this headline was misleading, and suggested the university itself sanctioned the protest, rather than a group of IUSB students. The headline has been amended to be more clear.

Protestors gathered outside Hobby Lobby on Grape Road Thursday to show their disappointment with the Supreme Court ruling on contraception Monday. The court ruled Hobby Lobby is not required to provide insurance that covers certain contraceptives. IU South Bend students put the protest together urging people not to shop at the store.

"I think it's completely inappropriate for a company to say what their employees can and cannot spend their money on, including insurance," says one protestor, Katherine Price.

"When it comes to healthcare it should be between a Doctor and a patient, not a boss," says another, Rhonda Redman.

Not everyone sees it this way. Some say Hobby Lobby is exercising it's religious freedom. We caught up with a shopper earlier this week who came by to support the store.

"Our rights do not come from government, they come from God."

Many Republican lawmakers are also calling the court's decision a victory.

"You shouldn't have to give up your religious beliefs in order to operate a business in the United States. and that's what the supreme court said," says Tennessee Republican, Lamar Alexander.

The protestors point out birth control is also used for medical needs other than contraception, and they feel Hobby Lobby is suppressing women's rights.

"While it is religious freedom, it's also discrimination against others," says Dominique Bonilla.

The group's Facebook page encouraged picketers to remain peaceful during the protest.
