A previous version of this story included information from South Bend Police that the victim was 36-years-old. The St. Joseph County Prosecutor's office confirmed this was an error.

A man is dead after being shot in South Bend on Saturday night. The shooting happened near Olive and Linden shortly before midnight.

South Bend Police have identified the victim as 55-year-old Michael Gillam. Police say Gillam was found inside a building on the 200 block of N. Olive St. An autopsy confirmed he died of a gunshot wound to the chest.

Michael Barcza is the owner of Mike Bajdek's Service located just near the scene of the shooting. "It's tragic," Barcza said. "Somebody loses their life over I assume a stupid argument of some kind and that's terrible. I hate seeing it."

The St. Joseph County Prosecutor's office says Michael Taylor, 55, was arrested as a suspect in the case and is being held at the St. Joseph County Jail on a preliminary charge of murder. The investigation is ongoing.

"A few more police officers I always think might help. Whether it does or not, I really couldn't really tell you that," Barcza said.

There were a number of people near the scene who knew Gillam. None of them wanted to speak with FOX28 on camera. They did tell our crew Gillam was a great friend and were sad to hear the news of his death. They also informed us he was a father and grandfather.

Early Monday morning, crews responded to a fire at the same address. It is not known whether the two incidents are related.
