Indianapolis officer shot dead honored for bravery

Posted: Updated:

Indianapolis police say an officer killed in a gun battle with a man armed with an assault rifle was honored for his bravery and his work.

Police say 51-year-old Officer Perry Renn died Saturday night after responding with other officers to a report of shots fired. Twenty-five-year-old Major Davis Jr. was walking away from officers when witnesses say he opened fire on them.

Officers returned fire and struck Davis, who's in critical condition following surgery. He faces a preliminary charge of murder.

Renn worked as a street patrol officer his entire career of more than 20 years. He was awarded the Medal of Bravery in 2003 and received a letter of commendation for his efforts during the 2011 Indiana State Fair stage collapse that killed seven people.
