Two Indiana police officers killed in the line of duty this weekend

Posted:
A deadly night for Indiana police officers. Two officers were killed in the line of duty, within 24 hours.

A massive manhunt was sparked in Gary for the suspect who killed an officer in his patrol vehicle this morning.

Police say, 47-year-old Jeffrey Westerfield, who served 19 years on the force, was working the midnight shift when the assailant walked up to his open patrol car window and fatally shot him in the head. A patrolman discovered the scene around 6:00am Sunday, initiating a manhunt in northwest Indiana.

We're told a person of interest was taken into custody. No charges have been announced and a motive for the shooting wasn't immediately clear.

According to police, Sunday was Westerfield's birthday.

In Indianapolis, police say a 22 year veteran was shot and killed while on duty.

Police say Officer Perry Renn responded to a shots being fired call in northeast Indianapolis, Saturday night. Two suspects were found in an alley, one of which began exchanging gunfire with Renn. Renn and the suspect were both shot. The officer died after being taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The suspect, 25-year-old Major Davis Junior, remains in critical condition. Police reports show he has had several encounters with police but only one conviction, a criminal misdemeanor possession of marijuana charge filed in August 2008.

Court records show the suspect's father died in police custody 11 years ago.
