UPDATE: South Bend Fire investigators say cause of fire at scene of Saturday's fatal shooting was incendiary

Posted: Updated:
SOUTH BEND - South Bend fire and police departments are working together to determine the cause of a fire Monday morning on N. Olive St.

South Bend Fire Dept. Captain Gerard Ellis reports the cause of the fire is still under investigation, but has been ruled to be incendiary. "Could be something simple as a lighted cigarette butt or an incendiary Molotov cocktail. Kind of covers a broad range of items," Ellis said.

He reports samples have been taken and will be tested at the State Police Lab and that his department is working with police. The building the fire happened in, on the 200 block of N. Olive St., is the same building police found 55-year-old Michael Gillam shot to death inside of Saturday night.

"The shooting is obviously under investigation with the police department," South Bend Fire Department Captain Gerard Ellis said. "Until they release any more of the details we have nothing to add on to that whether or not they are related or not."

Crews responded to a report of a fire on N. Olive St. near Linden Ave. early Monday morning. Ellis initially reported the fire was at a business which was unoccupied when the fire broke out shortly after 1:00am. Officials temporarily blocked off streets in the area while they put the fire out. Ellis reported only minor damage to the building. There were no reported injuries associated with the fire.
