I&M announces solar energy project that could feature a South Bend facility

Indiana & Michigan Power is proposing a solar energy pilot project to the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission, and could feature South Bend in their plans.

I&M is currently awaiting approval from the commission on a Clean Energy Solar Pilot Project that they say will have a generation capacity of roughly 16 megawatts, or enough energy to power 2,500 homes per year. The plan calls for five facilities, and a location in the South Bend area is tentatively expected, but not finalized.

The project's goals are not just to provide clean energy, but to offer an opportunity to study what goes into operating a utility-scale solar facility.

Pending approval, construction is scheduled to begin in early 2016 and to be finished later in the year.
