Online tool assists police to find stolen equipment

A nation wide property search tool helps break a South Bend Police Department burglary case.

It is called "LeadsOnline". It can be used to check paw shop activity outside of the city of South Bend that may be related to Burglary Unit cases.

On June 2nd, South Bend Police were alerted to a residential burglary where the suspect had broken in and stolen over 40,000 dollars worth of musical equipment from the home while the resident was out of town. The victim had specific detail of the stolen property. It was not at the area pawnshops.

Days after the incident the Burglary Unit Detective Kelly Waite used LeadsOnline. While searching he found a transaction in Chicago where the items sold were consistent with some of the stolen property. Waite then traveled to Chicago to find the property sold was some of the stolen equipment.

The person who made the initial transaction was located and information was gathered that lead to most of the remaining property being recovered in South Bend.

This case is still under investigation and further leads are being followed.
