Elkhart County Sheriff's Department warns of phone scam

Elkhart County -

A women in Elkhart County was part of a scam where she lost over 4,000 dollars.

The Elkhart County Sheriff's Department took a report where an 86 year old victim received a phone call from a person claiming to be her grandson.

The "grandson" indicated he had been incarcerated in a Massachusetts jail and needed bond money. He guided the victim through the process of placing money onto MoneyPak Green Dots cards, which can be bought at area retail store, convinced her she needed to provide him with the numbers on the back of cards in order to redeem the cash. The victim lost 4,500 dollars.

The ECSD reminds residents that if you received a phone call from anyone claiming to be a family member in need of money to bond out a local jail or prison, or a foreign jail or prison, be cautious.

ECSD also says to ask additional questions for the person on the phone such as contact information for the jail or prison they are claiming to be held at.
