Literacy Jam to take place in South Bend

SOUTH BEND - Studies show kids who read over summer break gain reading skills, while those who do not often slide backward.

Some students in South Bend have been reading and they want to show off what they learned.

The South Bend Chapter of Indiana Black Expo is inviting everyone out to their Literacy Jam Saturday, July 12, at 1:00 pm at the Charles Martin Youth Center.

Literacy Jam’s mission is to encourage children to read and discuss at least one book during the summer.  Students read a book and come together to test their knowledge of the book... The competitions are similar in style to team trivia contest.

The year long project began with the distributions of free books.  SBCIBE handed out more than one thousand books during the program year and collaborated with various organizations including LaSalle Landing Elks Lodge 298.

Additionally, a library is being set up at Beacon Heights in the laundry room.

The goal of the project is to ensure that every kid has an opportunity to read.
