South Bend Councilwoman sends letter to Deputy Mayor Neal on City Park Police

Posted: Updated:
SOUTH BEND - South Bend Common Councilwoman Valerie Schey sent a letter to Deputy Mayor Mark Neal saying she has been told City Park Police were stripped of their guns and emergency vehicles within the past month.

She says this issue has her very concerned.

In the letter she also comments, with the recent spike in violent crime in the city, this restriction may pose a problem.

The South Bend Mayor's Office issued the following statement on the matter:

"The mission of the South Bend Park Rangers is to protect the natural and historic treasures of our city parks, recreational facilities, and historic sites, and the safety, security and well-being of all who visit them. The decision for the Rangers to not carry guns was made earlier this year, and implemented July 1, 2014.

Park Rangers are not Indiana Law Enforcement Academy trained and certified, and for liability reasons, they do not carry guns nor do they have arrest powers."

FOX28 will be speaking with Councilwoman Schey and will have more tonight at 10.
