SOUTH BEND - Some cat-crazed and dog-loving youngsters are getting a first-hand feel for what it's like to run an animal shelter. This week marks the first-of-its kind animal shelter summer camp in South Bend.

"We have a lot of animals in our community that are facing a lot of challenges," said Melissa Eikens from Pet Rescue in South Bend.

In order to help tackle those challenges, South Bend Animal Control and the Pet Refuge are teaming up and inviting kids inside.

"It's incredibly important to light that fire underneath the kids so early on so then they can become ambassadors out in the community," said Matt Harmon.

Both shelters are hosting camps that allow kids to interact with animals as they learn about caring for and rescuing them. That sounds like the cat's meow to a group of self-professed animal-lovers.

Campers toured the shelters, helped make ribbons for special need dogs, and even learned about natural wildlife.

The shelters will be hosting two more one-week sessions at $150.You can find more information on camp dates and registration here.
