SPARKS-STARS

Parker's 34 points lifts Sparks to win over Fever

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Candace Parker scored 17 of her season-high 34 points in the third quarter and Los Angeles overcame a 10-point halftime deficit to beat the Indiana Fever 86-78 on Tuesday night.

The win was a season-high third straight for the Sparks, who lost Nneka Ogwumike to a mild strain in her right ankle in the second quarter. She finished with two points and two rebounds.

Tamika Catchings did all she could, scoring 25 points in the game for Indiana and 17 in the game's final 13 minutes. Indiana is now 2-3 with Catchings back in the lineup after she missed the first 17 games of the season with a strained back.

The Fever, which led 46-36 at halftime, lost a second half lead for the seventh time in their last 10 games.

INDIANA-CHANGES

Hoosiers eager to get glimpse at new-look team

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) - Indiana coach Tom Crean is throwing opponents a change-up.

He's willing to play old-school small ball, and he's still working out the details. The first real test of this new-look team comes next month when the Hoosiers travel to Montreal for five games in six days.

Crean isn't making evaluations based on wins or losses. Instead, he's looking for team chemistry, to see how players respond to challenges and which players are best equipped to excel offensively and defensively.

Indiana wants to change course after finishing a dismal season that kept them out of the postseason and prompted Crean to say Tuesday he might have booed himself in some situations last season, too.

PREP ATHLETES OF YEAR

Towns, Turner win national prep athlete awards

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Karl Towns Jr., a 7-footer headed to Kentucky to play basketball, and Brianna Turner, a Notre Dame recruit, have been honored as national prep athletes of the year.

Towns led his St. Joseph High School team to three straight state titles before graduating a year early this spring. The forward from Metuchen, New Jersey, averaged 20.9 points, 13.4 rebounds and 6.2 blocked shots last season. He earned a 3.50 grade point average and has played for the Dominican senior national team since he was 16.

Turner led Manvel (Texas) High to consecutive state titles, averaging 20.8 points, 11.5 rebounds and 4.2 assists in just 23 minutes a game last season. The guard-forward started all 154 possible games during her prep career.

The awards presented Tuesday night are sponsored by Gatorade.

ALL-STAR GAME

Jeter, Trout lead AL over NL 5-3 in All-Star game

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Helping send Derek Jeter out a winner in his last All-Star game appearance, Mike Trout drove in two runs with a triple and a double to lead the American League past the National League 5-3 on Tuesday night.

Jeter started his 14th and final midsummer gathering of the game's best with a vintage opposite-field double, following an ovation from the Target Field crowd of more than one minute. The Yankees captain went 2 for 2 and was removed to another roar from the fans in the top of the fourth inning.

Max Scherzer picked up the victory with a scoreless inning, and Twins closer Glen Perkins pitched a perfect ninth for the save in front of his home crowd to again give the AL home-field advantage for the World Series.

Another hometown favorite, Pat Neshek, took the loss for the NL.

Miguel Cabrera homered for the AL.
