UPDATE: One dead, suspect at-large after Saturday morning shooting in Madison

Posted: Updated:
UPDATE: MADISON (WKOW)-- One person is dead and police are searching for a suspect, after a shooting just after 9 Saturday morning on Madison's eastside.

Police say the call came in as a disturbance and shots fired in the Howard Johnson's parking lot on East Washington Ave.

Police are still searching for the suspect who is described as a black male between the ages 30 and 40. He is between 5’10” and 6 feet tall and heavy set, approximately 350 pounds. He was possibly wearing orange and brown shorts, and a light-colored button down shirt.

Police are also looking for a white Infiniti sport utility vehicle with Wisconsin license plates 980 W-J-N.

“Given the circumstances of today, we don't want any citizens to approach or contact anyone who may be in or around or associated with that vehicle,” said Madison Police Chief Mike Koval.

Chief Koval says when officers arrived on scene, life-saving efforts were made.

“Upon arrival, because of it's proximity, Madison Fire Department had heard those shots and were attempting to render aid,” Chief Koval said.

Despite those efforts, the victim, who is described as a 46-year-old man not from the Madison area, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say he sustained multiple gunshot wounds and it appears only the suspect was armed. It's unclear what sparked the disturbance.

“It's entirely unknown, the relationship, if at all between our victim and suspect,” Chief Koval said.

As the shooting unfolded in the hotel parking lot, next door, an employee at Aldi says she heard those gunshots and police locked down the store during the incident.

“Once it was clearly established that the threat was no longer present, business could resume as usual,” Chief Koval said.

Many of the guests staying at the hotel say they didn't hear anything but awoke to dozens of squad cars.

“It's pretty frightening actually, to just have no idea and wake up, come out here and there's a dead body in the parking lot where I was sleeping 100 feet away,” said Reed Basner, a guest at the hotel.

The investigation is ongoing, but Chief Koval says there doesn't appear to be a threat to the public.

“I believe this is going to result in more of a targeted influence,” Chief Koval said. “I don't think there's any sort of general issue to public safety at this point.”

As of Saturday evening, police say they believe it was a targeted act of gun violence. The investigative team has not identified a suspect but is continuing to follow leads.

If you see the suspect or the vehicle, call 911 and do not approach. Anyone with other information should call Crime Stoppers at 608-266-4016.
